Black Bean Patties

Adapted from 1000 Vegan Recipes


  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup minced onion
  • 1 to 4 garlic cloves
  • 15 ounce can black beans or 1 and 1/2 cups of your own.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley or 3/4 tablespoons dry parsley
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs or 1/2 cup panko
  • 1/4 cup vital wheat gluten
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teapoon fresh thyme or 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper


  • Rinse and drain beans
  • Cook garlic and onion via microwave or stovetop
  • Add breadcrumbs/panko, garlic, onion, paprika, parsley, thyme, vital wheat gluten, salt, and pepper to a food processor
  • Process throughly until a finely ground dry orangish mixture is created
  • Heat a teaspoon of olive oil on medium heat in a large frying pan
  • Add a teaspoon of olive oil and the beans to the food processor
  • Pulse until beans are in shards but not ground into oblivion
  • Dump the mixture into a large bowl or onto a work surface and kneed with your hands for about one minute
  • Divide and mold into 4 burger patties
  • Add the patties to the now heated pan and cook from 3 to 5 minutes per side to your preferred texture
